The Highly Effective First Line Manager

Background

This course has been developed on the basis that effectiveness as a First Line Manager, Supervisor or Team Leader is dependant on having well developed personal qualities as a foundation. On these, truly effective interpersonal capabilities and skills can then be built. This course sets out to teach the essential steps and skills to grow, firstly in self-leadership and then onwards to the management and leadership of others. It draws on the work of many seminal management and leadership thinkers and practitioners, with particular acknowledgment to Dr. Stephen Covey's 'Seven Habits' the principal teachings of which are interwoven into the overall structure. The result is a powerful, focused contribution to personal and leadership development.

The Aims of this Course

The course aims to provide participants with:

• a tried and trusted framework for significant personal growth and development
• a sound understanding of the principles and practice of management and leadership
• the skills to contribute effectively as young developing managers in their organisations and to lead and develop others as they grow
• the personal confidence and motivation to do it

The Course Structure

The course is structured to run over 6 days. A typical in-company presentation will leave a week between each of the days to allow for on-the-job application and skills development, but this can be varied to suit requirements.

The course will consist of a mixture of classroom sessions, many interactive workshops, exercises and workouts.

The formal classroom and workshop sessions will be fully supported by comprehensive reference notes.

Course Presenter

Kevin Smith who has developed this course, will present it. He has developed and presented a number of other significant courses and conducted training through both public and in-house courses since the early 1990's. He is a registered trainer on the FÁS/EI National Register of Trainers.
